The beginning seemed so compressed-like it was trying to suppress something underneath. Months later, I had my I-Pod on shuffle and “So Appalled” began to play. Over time, I almost believed that my subconscious had made it up (though I knew I wasn’t that creative). It haunted me for a while, and I couldn’t place where I’d heard it. Then, one night, I had a really bad dream, and all I could remember when I woke up was this menacing music that had been playing in the background. I thought it was good after a couple of listens, but nothing besides the singles (“Runaway,” “Power,” “Monster”) really jumped out at me, so I forgot about it. Strange personal story about “So Appalled”: I bought “MBDTF” because of the hype and because I’d always liked Kanye. Who Will Survive in America – It feels just tacked on to “Lost in the World” and the album as a whole. All of the Lights (Interlude) – It’s a good little segue into the actual song, but not more than that.ġ3. You know what’s really “ridiculous” is the way that old dude pronounces it.Ĥ. So Appalled – It’s a decent song, but following “Monster” sounds kind of weak. Devil in a New Dress – Some funny lines, but otherwise I don’t get a whole lot out of this song.ħ. The production is kind of murky, but I’m guessing that’s on purpose.Ĩ. Gorgeous – Decent song, but nothing spectacular. Dark Fantasy – Starts out with the worst fake English accent ever (and if it’s not fake it should be), and has the sped up voice thing Kanye’s done better before and sounds like Alvin and the Chipmunks here. Would have worked better as the closer than “Who Will Survive in America.”ġ. Lost in the World – A good song that’s sort of a summation of the album as a whole. Hell of a Life – A good song to follow up “Runaway,” with its dark production and lyrics, Kanye’s just saying “fuck it” and moving on.ġ2. Overall the song would be slightly better without it.ġ0. This song works well as the third and final song in a mini suite with “Runaway” and “Hell of a Life.” I don’t mind the Chris Rock interlude as much as some people, and find it funny, but agree that it’s not something I have to hear multiple times. Blame Game – Kanye continues to address his breakup and broken heart. King Crimson has certainly never sounded better.ġ1. Power – This one pops, with some bold production and some of Kanye’s more purposeful rapping. Monster – The beat bangs hard and the guest rappers all do a good job, with Nicki Minaj especially distinguishing herself.ģ. It reminds me a little of Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind,” but not quite as good.Ħ. All of the Lights – This song has some real excitement to it with the music, Kanye’s rapping and the numerous guest voices all coming together well.

If every song was this good, then the album would be as good as some people seem to think it is.ĥ. Runaway – A near-perfect blend of atmosphere, tension, mood and honesty. Is this album a masterpiece? I’m not convinced, but it’s a flawed one if it is.ĩ. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy track listing: I'd like to keep everything in the current topic and the result topic. Next week will be Miles Davis' Kind of Blue.Īlso, if you missed an album that you want to rank, you can do so in this thread. I will go with the top album of each respective decade, but I might skip questionable albums (I doubt anyone wants to rank the tracks of 69 Love Songs, no matter how great the album is). I plan to go in cycles of decades with the 1950s and 2010s once every other cycle. Simply rank all the tracks from your favorite to your least. It's an excuse to go back to classic albums and a way to gauge the best and worst tracks of the most acclaimed albums. The basic idea is to rank the tracks off the album each week to see how each track compares to each other.
